Mukades are evil. That's the simple answer. They are a carefully constructed crawling, stinging piece of evil. Mukade can climb up walls, they can drop off of ceilings on to unsuspecting ALTs and bite them as they sleep.

Types of mukade

Of the four families of centipede, the mukade belong to the Scolopendridae family, which is the only poisonous family of centipede. There are hundreds of types of mukade in the family, however the most common mukade in Japan are the tobizu 鳶頭, the aozu 青頭 and the akazu 赤頭. The tobizu has a black body and a distinct red head and yellow legs. It would probably be quite hard to miss one of these beauties crawling along your ceiling.

Mukade lifestyle

Mukade are invertebrates and so like other invertebrates they have a hard external skeleton which cannot change in size. Unlike other invertebrates mukade do not have a waxy coating to their exterior and so have a constant need to be moist. You might, like me, often find “dried out” dead mukade in your house. However be careful assuming that is what they are. Because mukade can't increase the size of their skeleton, they need to shed it in order to grow. What you might find in your house is the “skin” of a growing mukade and not the mukade itself. Mukade tend to eat their own shedding in order to regain the lost strength it took them to shed.

Mukade can live up to 7 years! That’s right, Mukade generations could be inhabiting your cupboards at this very moment! They tend to shelter inside during winter and lay eggs in the spring. Another interesting point about Mukade is that they like high places and have no problems scaling walls. As mentioned at the start they can climb walls and ceilings. Mukade infestations are known to occur even in 5th floor apartments.

Mukade diet

What do mukade eat? Mukade eat small insects and cockroaches. Mukade are predators with a very aggressive temperament. They will eat anything they can overpower. Their front segment is modified into a claw for grabbing their prey and pulling it to the mouth whereby the mukade can administer its poisonous bite. Mukade are generally not lethal to humans and there has only ever been one reported fatal mukade attack, which was reported in Thailand. A giant mukade bit a 7 year old Thai girl on the head, though it’s not clear if she died due to the bite or an allergic reaction. It is said that smaller mukade (i.e. 2cm) are more poisonous than larger ones (20cm).

Killing mukade

Apparently there is a new mukade spray for sale that cauterizes the mukade and kills it in "0.8 seconds". It is in a spray tin with a very long nozzle and a picture of a mukade on the front. It retails for about 430 yen. There are a few sprays with pictures of Mukade on the cover which act as nerve agents. These aren't as good as they slowly kill the mukade. The best preventative measure is the large yellow bottle of mukade powder. This powder seems to dry the mukades up and it can be spread around the outside of your house for effective results. Some older Japanese use powdered sulpher (available from areas with volcanoes) in the same manner. The most effective method of killing mukade is to hunt them at night and crush the head with a heavy blunt object, cutting them in half merely allows the business end to run after you faster. Like spiders, mukade can lay still for a long time, then move at terrific speed when placed in danger. They will often thrash their bodies when disturbed, which is accompanied by rapid biting.

Folklore

The Japanese have many interesting ideas about the mukade. To kill them you must burn them. Why? "Otherwise they come back to life (yomigaeru 蘇る)" Another is to pour boiling water on them because "mukade don't like that (niigate)" . After a surprising appearance by a black-bodied and orange-legged mukade our host said that the best way to kill them is by boiling water. Any other way then they emit a pheromone that attracts other mukade. According to this source burning or smashing them is the worst thing to do. Another idea is to put masking tape on the mukade. Though this doesn't kill them just traps them. One contributor finds the best method for killing the small ones is accidentally standing on them when one wakes up. Mukade have a rather painful bite but if you stand on their heads they usually lose their desire to bite you. It's also difficult to bite something that is crushing your head. This would, no doubt, also work on the big ones, however, it's not recommended.

Mukade are said to always travel in pairs so even if you successfully kill one, you'll be unable to sleep safely until you find the other! Mukade, as legend has it, were designed during the Second World War as a deterrent to foreign invasion. However they broke loose from the lab and escaped into the wild. Another story has it that they crawled out of the third circle of hell (the lustful, the non believers) during the Kanto earthquake.
